IEC 61850: The Digitalization of HV/MV Substations

IEC 61850 is redefining substation architecture by replacing traditional copper wiring with standardized digital communications. An overview of its impact on substation engineering in Morocco.

What is IEC 61850?

IEC 61850 is the international standard that defines communication and data modeling in electrical transformer substations. Published in the 2000s and revised in 2020, it replaces proprietary protocols (DNP3, Modbus, IEC 60870-5) with a unified, vendor-independent data model.

Its adoption is now essential in ONEE and MASEN projects, as well as for large-power industrials in Morocco.

Architecture of a Digital Substation

An IEC 61850-compliant substation is organized in three levels:

  • Process level (Level 0): Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) collect measurements and execute protection automations.
  • Bay/station level (Level 1): a redundant Ethernet network (GOOSE, Sampled Values) ensures real-time exchange between IEDs without point-to-point wiring.
  • Supervision level (Level 2): the SCADA system polls IEDs via MMS for data acquisition and operator commands.

Key Protocols

GOOSE is the fast messaging protocol used for circuit breaker tripping and status signals. Typical latency is below 4 ms, effectively replacing hardwired interlocking circuits.

Sampled Values (SV) enables digital transmission of current and voltage samples from instrument transformers to IEDs, eliminating high-precision copper cabling.

Cybersecurity is the main challenge of digital substations. The IEC 62351 standard defines the encryption and authentication mechanisms to implement. Rigorous network segmentation and industrial firewalls are essential.

Training operations teams is equally critical: maintenance engineers must master Ethernet network diagnostic tools, in addition to traditional electrical skills.

Conclusion
